Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

14 & 15 Year-Old FAQ's

1. Why does DYS ask applicants to submit a copy of their most recent report card and two recommendation forms?
The applicant's report card will be used to verify proof of residency and academic achievement. The letters of recommendation will be used to learn more about the applicant's character.

2. Will grades be a determining factor when selecting applicants to work in the program?
Grades are not a determinant for acceptance or placement, but are strongly considered.

3. If a report card is lost or misplaced, can any other form of proof be used?
Parents are encouraged to contact their child's school for a copy of their most recent report card to substitute for the lost or misplaced card.

4. How recent must an applicant's report card be?
Youth must present a copy of their most recent report card for approval.

5. Who can complete an applicant's recommendation form?
Principals, teachers, counselors, Neighborhood Association officers, faith-based organization leaders, coaches, community organization leaders, and youth service providers are all considered community leaders.

6. Do I need to get a work permit application for my child?
No. Youth who are hired to participate in the program will be notified when and how to obtain pre-employment documents (e.g., tax forms, medical forms, parental authorization, etc.).

7. If we submit the information requested, will my child be guaranteed a job?
Submitting the required information completes the next step in the process, but job placement is determined by available funding.

8. How much money will Kids & Jobs Program participants be paid?
Pay is a strictly confidential matter between employer and employee. Youth will receive pay information prior to work at a mandatory orientation.

9. What types of jobs will 14 & 15 Year-Old Kids & Jobs Program participants perform?
Because companies are usually unwilling to hire youth between 14 and 15 years of age, DYS partners with the public and non-profit sectors of the business community to provide them with first-time work experience. Some examples of job sites include: Birmingham Public Libraries, the Birmingham Police Department, area daycare providers, summer camps, and faith-based organizations.
