HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - The Huntsville area is benefiting from the generosity of a woman whose husband died in an airplane crash in Georgia 32 years ago.
A Southern Airways jet crashed at New Hope, Ga., in 1977, killing Mary Cummer's husband and 71 other people. Cummer's financial advisor told The Huntsville Times in a story Friday that she received a settlement of between $500,000 and $750,000 and invested it wisely.
On Thursday, Cummer's estate issued checks for almost $2.5 million.
Cummer gave her largest donation of $734,000 to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where she was a longtime member.
Donations of $362,000 each went to the public library, a public radio station, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross and Brown University, where Cummer graduated.
