Here is what you saw on Good Day Alabama for March 4, 2010:
JEH JEH LIVE - The Southern Museum of Flight Announces the Grand Opening of the Korean War Jets Exhibit. On the morning of 9-21-53 at exactly 9:21 a.m., Alabama native, Sgt. Tom Feltman, was sitting in his Air Police jeep close to the main runway at Kimpo Air Force Base, South Korea. He noticed a rather unusual aircraft about to land on the wrong end of the runway. The aircraft appeared to ignore the traffic pattern, as an American F-86 Sabre was about to land, on the opposite end of the runway, at the same time. As the strange aircraft touched down and streaked by at a high rate of speed, Sgt. Feltman noticed a communist red star on the aircraft's fuselage. It was a Soviet-built MiG-15 flown by the North Korean Air Force, and the events that would soon unfold that September morning revealed one of the most significant stories in American aviation. For the first time, a rare and illusive MiG-15 fighter jet was in the hands of the United States Military following the defection of a North Korean pilot.
The Korean War Jets Exhibit at the Southern Museum of Flight highlights the defection of Lt. No Kum Sok (Kenneth Rowe), a 21-year old, elite North Korean Air Force pilot, as well as the historic events that transpired following the defection. The unique diorama display of Kimpo Air Force Base in South Korea features two of the primary fighter jets that became adversaries during the Korean War era - the F-86 Sabre and the MiG-15. The Korean War Jets Exhibit Grand Opening is tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. At the Southern Museum of Flight. Former North Korean pilot Kenneth Rowe (Lt. No Kum Sok), Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame member and F-86 pilot John Lowery, Tom Feltman, one of the first airmen to arrive on the scene at Kimpo on that September morning in 1953, Korean War Jet Ace, General Charles Cleveland, as well as many community leaders and Korean War veterans, will be in attendance. HOME IMPROVEMENT - There are a few things you need to consider when choosing a type of azalea. Azaleas come in almost any color and shade you want, so choose your favorite one. Some have huge blooms while others aren't as large. Some bloom in early spring like Red Ruffle and others bloom in late spring like a Gumpo. Some will grow 6'-8' tall and 4'-6' wide like a Formosa, while others will only grow 2-3' tall and wide like a Gumpo azalea. Encore Azaleas are great because they bloom in the spring, summer, and fall, require little maintenance, and have big color. There are over 20 different varieties to meet any need you might have - large or small & every color imaginable from red to pink to purple. Encores are more expensive, but having azaleas that bloom so often makes up for it. Now is a great time to plant azaleas. As long as the ground isn't frozen, you can safely plant an azalea. Fall and spring are the best time to plant because the daytime temperatures aren't that high. High temperatures put a lot of stress on a plant and can keep it from growing well when first planted. Be sure to water well and daily after planting. Azaleas do grow better in more acidic soil. You can buy a soil test kid to see what the acid level of your soil is. Azaleas grow best in soils with a pH between 4.6 and 6.0. If your soil has too high a pH level, you can lower it by applying a fertilizer containing a high level of ammonium, the first number on the fertilizer bag, or a fertilizer sold specifically for azaleas. Also, remember that the soil in our area usually has a lot of clay in it, which is not good for growing azaleas. If you have a lot of clay in your soil, you should amend it with a soil conditioner, peat moss, or mix in some Miracle Gro Garden Soil. By amending the soil, you make sure the soil dissipates water properly as azaleas don't like to have what is called "wet feet." There is plant food specifically designed for azaleas. It's best to use a slow release fertilizer that will feed the plant for 2-4 months versus a basic fertilizer that only lasts 2 or 3 weeks. It's best to prune immediately after they bloom, usually June or July. Pruning later risks interfering with the development of next year's buds. Begin by pruning off dead or injured branches, which could cause disease and insect problems in the future. Then prune back tall, gangly limbs shooting out of the top of the bush. This will promote a more attractive, compact shape. Azaleas are very resistant to bugs and diseases.
