MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) - A new DVD is addressing what some educators say is a growing problem among young people: suicide.
With the backing of the governor's office, the Alabama Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is sending a copy of a new DVD called "More Than Sad" to every public and private high school in the state.
"The actors portray what a child is going through, what his friends are seeing and how to get help and come out of that," says Alan Weeks. Weeks is chairman of the Alabama's AFSP chapter and has seen firsthand, the devastation suicide causes.
"Matt was the youngest of three sons. He had just graduated high school. We struggled with the last couple of years in high school…he was going through a depression."
Weeks hopes the DVD will shed light on not just depression, but substance abuse and bullying and the connection it can have to suicide. "We hope through early education it can help and save kids and save kids for years to come."
