Gifts for Kids Angel Tree

FOX6 WBRC-TV is proud to once again partner with the Salvation Army for our annual "Gifts for Kids Angel Tree" program.

The "Gifts for Kids Angel Tree" program is a way for people to donate Christmas gifts to foster children and children in need during the holiday season. You can either supply the gifts yourself or you can donate cash to the Salvation Army who will then use that money to buy clothing and toys for children on their Angel Tree list.


How to Help

There are several ways you can help:

1) Adopt an angel. Fill out the form below or visit the Colonial Brookwood Village from November 18 until December 11 to adopt an angel from the Salvation Army Angel Tree. Instructions will be provided on how to fulfill the adoption.

2) Drop off a gift at Chick-Fil-A or Lowe's.From November 18 until December 21, you can go to any area Chick-fil-a and pull an angel from their trees or just drop off a new unwrapped gift and those will be used for our "forgotten angels." You can also drop off a new, unwrapped gift at all area Lowe's for the same purpose during those same dates.

3) Donate at Lowe's. Go to any area Lowe's location. They take check, cash or credit at their registers from November 25th until December 24th.

4) Donate online. Visit www.BirminghamSalvationArmy.org to donate online to the Angel Tree program, volunteer, or host a drive.

The History of FOX6 Gifts for Kids

In 1998, FOX6 teamed up with the Department of Human Resources to help collect toys for foster children in Jefferson County. Since then, the FOX6 Gifts for Kids program has expanded to include several counties in and around Birmingham, providing toys to tens of thousands foster children in the Birmingham metro area.


The History of The Salvation Army Angel Tree

Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army's highest profile Christmas efforts. Angel Tree was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas time.

The program got its name because the Whites identified the wishes of local children by writing their gift needs on Hallmark greeting cards featuring pictures of angels and placing them on a Christmas Tree at the mall. Thanks to the Whites, who were assigned by The Army to the Lynchburg area at the time, more than 700 children had a brighter Christmas that first year.

Three years later, when the Whites were transferred to Nashville, Tennessee, Angel Tree was launched in Music City during the 1982 Christmas season. WSM radio, which airs the Grand Ole Opry, came on board that year as the first Angel Tree co-sponsor in the U.S.

Because of the on-air promotion on WSM in Nashville, as well as national publicity on CNN and the Larry King Show, news of Angel Tree spread across the country like wild fire. Since that time, the program has grown to include Angel Trees in throughout the Birmingham area.

In 2007, The Salvation Army partnered with Fox6 Gifts for Kids, a program designed to give foster children in the Birmingham metro area Christamas gifts. With this partnership, 7,113 children were helped.
