Birmingham mayor wants transit overhaul

Posted: Updated:

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham mayor William Bell said Tuesday he is willing to give extra money to transit, but only if the current management team is kicked out.

Mayor Bell presented his plan Tuesday to help the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority. The BJCTA has said it needs another $9 million by the end of the month to remain in operation.

Mayor Bell said Tuesday he was willing to give the BJCTA funds to operate for 90 days, but in return, he wants three things:

complete new management within 60 days
retire all outstanding debt by the end of the year
a Blue Ribbon Panel to get to the bottom of the transit troubles

Bell said funding, budget, routes, schedules and several other items should be addressed by the panel.
