Jacksonville State, UAB chosen for genome research initiative

JACKSONVILLE, AL (WBRC) – Two Alabama universities have been selected to participate in an elite research project from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Jacksonville State University and UAB will two of twelve universities chosen for inclusion in the Science Education Alliance's National Genomics Research Initiative (NGRI) in 2010.
Freshmen students from the schools will be able to make real discoveries by doing research on viruses called bacteriophages. At the end of the course, students will present their findings as presentations and publications.
"It's very much a student-led project," says the project lead for JSU, Dr. Chris Murdock. "They very much have a say in where they sample and what they do with it. When they are given the opportunity to discover a new virus and name it, there's an ownership there, they feel like they possess it.
