The Ten Commandments must be removed from Alabama's Judicial Building, that's the ruling from a federal judge in Montgomery Monday. U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson ruled the monument violates the constitution's ban on government promotion of religion.
Thompson gave Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore 30 days to remove the 5,300 pound granite monument from the rotunda of the state building. The monument was installed on the night of July 31st, 2001.
Moore testified during last month's trial that the commandments are the moral foundation of American law. He said the monument acknowledges God, but does not force anyone to follow his religious beliefs. Attorneys representing Moore have said in the past that they would appeal such a ruling.
WSFA will have the latest on today's ruling in Live at Five and the 6:00 Report.
