The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, July 6, 2010:
We've heard so many folks say that the issue of bingo should be brought before the citizens of Alabama for a vote. If it came to a vote, how exactly should the question be worded on the ballot?
As it is now, dog racing, closed circuit horse racing and old-fashioned paper bingo are legal.
Some have raised the idea of having a state lottery, benefiting education…like Georgia's plan.
So…should all forms of gambling be legalized…or not? Should the question on the ballot be limited to the question of legalizing bingo? If so, should the state regulate who owns a bingo business and should that be part of the language on the ballot?
Should the state try to legislate morality? It seems we have more questions than answers.
