The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, November 2, 2010:
I've been a football fan for a lot of years…but I just don't get it. UNDEFEATED Auburn has been ranked #1 in the BCS standings. Then, last weekend, Auburn and Oregon both play teams of average ability on the road. We wake up Monday and Auburn is #2…What's that about?
Statistically Auburn and Oregon are very closely matched…but what justified the flip in the ranking? I know…it's a combination of human and computer polls.
Some have said it doesn't really matter whether Auburn is #1 or #2…because as long as they are at least #2 they'll play in the championship game. While, logically, all of that may be true, and certainly being #2 in the country is no small feat…I'd bet a lot of Auburn fans would say it does make a difference. Are the polls fair… #1 or #2? Does it matter to you?
