CHELSEA, AL (WBRC) -

A Birmingham doctor was arrested Friday on charges of illegally distributing and trafficking prescription drugs.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office, in a statement Friday afternoon to FOX6 News, said Jerry B. Hankins, 44, was arrested Friday at his business by investigators and DEA agents. Investigators said Hankins was charged with three counts of Unlawful Distribution of a Controlled Substance and three counts of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance.

The sheriff's department said its Drug Enforcement Task Force began investigating Hankins in December 2010 at a medical clinic in Chelsea called "280 Recovery," which was formed to treat opiate addiction. Investigators said they determined Dr. Hankins was not operating the clinic in accordance to the rules set forth by the Drug Enforcement Administration and that he had violated several state statutes under the Code of Alabama.

A grand jury indicted Hankins after hearing the case earlier this week.

Hankins was being held Friday afternoon in the Shelby County Jail on $300,000 bond.
