
Officials with Alabama Power say they have been able to restore power to 50,000 people since the peak of the storms on Wednesday night.
According to the power provider, 412,229 customers were without power directly after the strong storms moved through the state. As of 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, power had been restored to 363,511.
By region, Alabama Power details the outages as follows:
Birmingham area (Jefferson, Shelby counties) – 168,261
Eastern areas (Including Anniston, Gadsden, Oxford) – 43,203
Western areas (including Bibb, Walker, Tuscaloosa counties) – 141,071
Southern areas (including Selma, Montgomery, Opelika) – 8,504
Southeast – 2,470
Alabama Power crews will be joined by other crews from different states in an effort to restore power.
If power is out, please call Alabama Power's automated reporting system at 1-800-888-APCO (2726). It is the fastest way to report an outage or a hazardous situation, such as a downed power line.
Authorities with the company say to turn off all appliances while power is off to avoid hazards when it is restored. They also urge people to stay away from downed lines and to stay clear of areas where crews are working.
