Search continues for toddler missing in Shelby County

SHELBY COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

The search continues for a little girl reported missing in Shelby County. The toddler was reported missing around 6 p.m. Monday from the Mt. Laurel community.

Captain Ken Burchfield says rescuers are searching the lake and its surrounding grounds. The area where the little girl disappeared is heavily wooded and the child had been playing earlier in the day near a sizable lake, according to officials. Divers searched the lake Monday and are searching it again Tuesday.

Sheriff's deputies remained in the area through the night and the search continued at dawn Tuesday. Investigators with the Sheriff's department say they are looking at every possible circumstance for the child's disappearance.

As of noon Tuesday, officials had not located the little girl. Experienced divers are continuing to search the area's lakes, ground crews are scouring the woods and a helicopter is searching the area by air.
