Homewood votes to rezone for Samford expansion

HOMEWOOD, AL (WBRC) -

The Homewood City Council voted Monday night to rezone an area of land near Samford, allowing the Baptist university to expand its campus into what is currently a residential neighborhood.

Samford plans to tear down more than 12 residential homes that it owns in order to make room to build a new dorm.

Several Homewood residents have spoken out against the rezoning and have been holding meetings in the past few weeks to try to convince the city council to save their neighborhoods from Samford's expansion plans.

Samford has promised to not rezone other areas near the campus and says it will wait seven more years before purchasing additional residential homes. The university also says it will appoint someone from the university to be a liaison with its neighbors.
