The Alabaster City Council is expected to hold a public hearing on an ordinance to increase the sales tax from three cents to four cents. Add the 4% state sales tax and the 1% Shelby County sales tax and consumers who shop in the city would pay 9%.
The hearing will take place during the regular council meeting at 7:00 p.m. at the city hall annex.
Members of the council have discussed the possibility of putting at least a portion of the proceeds into a new education fund.
The council is considering a city school system for Alabaster.
