A mother and daughter are dead tonight, killed in an early morning crash along Highway 280. Mt. Brook Police investigators are still trying to determine how the accident happened.
Authorities say around 6:13 Friday morning, 30-year-old Patrick Harrison of Gardendale was travel west-bound on 280 when his Chevy pickup crossed the median near Office Park Drive. He hit a Jeep Grand Cherokee head on. Ruby Brown, 74, of Birmingham was inside the Jeep. She died at the scene. Her daughter, 55–year-old Laura Campbell of Birmingham was taken to UAB Hospital where she later died.
Authorities say debris from the wreck hit a third vehicle driven by 49-year-old Terri Crumble of Fairfield. That caused her to cross the median and crash into an embankment. She sustained non-life threatening injuries. Harrison was taken to the burn unit at UAB where he was listed in serious but stable condition Friday night.
Investigators say they don't yet know why Harrison crossed the median. But Mt. Brook Fire Battalion Chief Chris Mullins says lots of accidents happen in that same area.
"It just seems to be a hot spot for wrecks and we really don't understand why we get as many as we do through that stretch there," Mullins said.
He believes guard rails in that area may help.
"If we can just keep cars on their respective sides, it would keep that from happening," Mullins said.
Brian Davis, a division engineer for ALDOT, says they will look into the matter. He says engineers will review the accident report and physically review the sight to see if indeed guard rails are needed in that area.
A Birmingham police officer at the scene said she was traveling eastbound with other units when they saw a huge fireball. They stopped to assist Mountain Brook with the accident. Crews from Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills and Birmingham responded to the scene today.
A Max Bus was slightly clipped in the accident. No one on board was injured nor was there significant damage to the bus.
Authorities cleared the wreck scene shortly before noon.
