BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police have identified the pedestrian struck and killed last night by a cruiser. Michael Hardy, 56 of Birmingham was crossing the road at Delta Street and 6th Avenue South 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when two officers transporting an inmate hit and killed him.

"This intersection is very dangerous," said Shalandia Nelson who lives in the area.

Nelson said this isn't the first time someone has been hit here, and she doubts it will be the last.

"When you come over the hill you really can't see," said Nelson.

Police say officers were heading to the jail when the accident happened. Sgt. Johnny Williams said, "At this point the investigation is underway.  We have crime scene techs on the scene.  They are reconstructing the scene."

Meanwhile, the officers involved are on paid administrative leave. Nelson hopes this will be a wake up call for folks who travel the area, "You could walk out here and someone could be coming toward, approaching that light. If they are not prepared for someone to be there by the time you get to them, you hit them," said Nelson.

The officers and the inmate were not hurt in the case.

As for the investigation, police believe it will conclude soon. Birmingham Police Department, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, and the Jefferson County D.A.'s office are investigating.
