HALEYVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
On Friday morning a man saw the national news about "Secret Santas" paying off layaway items at department stores.
He decided he wanted to do that too and went to the Haleyville Walmart and paid off almost every layaway in the building. He helped about 70 families and gave more than $11,000. The man asked that he be kept anonymous.
When people came to pick up their items later that day, Walmart employees told them that they didn't owe any more money. The man only asked that the recipients of his gifts share a kindness with others.
The reaction from people ranged from stunned silence, asking if it was all a joke, and crying.
Several people used their money they would have used on their layaway to buy a toy to help out other families in need. Some other gave money to pay on someone else's layaway.
Walmart management said the Christmas spirit was overwhelming and that they were thrilled to be a part of such a special gift
