BBB - David Smitherman with the Better Business Bureau joined us with advice on how to book a cruise for your vacation without getting scammed! Winter and spring are prime cruising months, but Better Business Bureau advises consumers to read all of the fine print before signing up for a special cruise deal. In 2011, BBB received more than 1,300 complaints against cruises. While many cruise deals are legitimate, there are always those sneaky few that end up sucking thousands of dollars from victims. BBB is urging consumers to be cautious of unsolicited mail with offers of free or discounted cruises.  BBB and CruiseCitic.com recommends the following tips to consumers who are looking to book a cruise getaway: don't be a victim, always check the business first, pay with a credit card, ensure your money is in the right hands, get proper confirmation of your booking, don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, & consider investing in travel insurance. BETH K - With all the controversy swirling around southern food diva Paula Deen and her diabetes diagnosis, this is a good time to talk seriously about diabetes. So let's put the controversy aside and talk about diabetes without talking about Paula Deen. Diabetes is a serious disease with serious consequences. People with diabetes aren't able to bring blood sugar levels back down to normal after they eat. Blood sugar that stays high is very damaging to the body. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure. & amputations. People with diabetes are more likely to die at a younger age than people without diabetes - and they usually die of heart disease. Heart disease and high blood pressure are very common in people with diabetes so treating heart disease is just as important as keeping the blood sugar under control, One of the biggest problems with diabetes is the number of people who don't know they have it: 7 million. So how do you know you have it? One way is to take the diabetes risk quiz at www.diabetes.org. The major risk factors are family history, weight gain, age, lack of exercise, & ethnicity. It's actually a very easy test to find out if you have diabetes. Ask your doctor for a blood sugar test to see if you have diabetes. If you don't have a regular diet, you can visit UAB Health Smart - UAB's free wellness clinic downtown. They'll test you for diabetes and give you help if you do have it. If you have diabetes, you can go to the UAB Kirklin Clinic for the Diabetes Education Class (there is a small fee for this class).  For more information, visit www.diabetes.org. Call (205) 996-2969 for a free blood sugar test at UAB Health Smart and (205) 801-8711 for the  Diabetes Education Class at Kirklin Clnic.

RICHARD JAFFE - Birmingham Attorney Richard Jaffe releases his book "Quest for Justice: Defending the Damned." Spotlighting sensational murder cases as well as his representation of the Olympic and Birmingham bomber, Eric Rudolph, here is the story of Richard Jaffe, the most successful attorney ever at exonerating innocent people accused of murder and wrongfully sentenced death row inmates. Follow him as he learns the truth about savage capital crimes, then through tense courtroom trials as he advocates for those who are literally fighting for their lives. It's a taut, suspenseful journey through crime and the legal process: murder scenes, courtrooms, judges' chambers and prison visiting rooms. Hear how the death penalty is decided and administered. Peer into Jaffe's soul and look into the souls, hearts and eyes of the men and women he has defended and those who opposed him in these battles to the death. Richard S. Jaffe is the senior partner of the Birmingham, Alabama, law firm of Jaffe & Drennan, P.C., specializing in the areas of criminal defense and civil rights. A graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, he is board certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a Criminal Trial Specialist and is currently listed in both Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America. He is licensed to practice law in New York, Georgia, the District of Columbia and Alabama.
