Clay, Center Point getting cleanup help from county

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Center Point and Clay are getting some financial help with their tornado cleanup. Next week the Jefferson County Commission will vote to allow the two tornado ravaged cities a chance to get rid of their storm debris at not cost.

Jefferson County gets a 10,000 ton break on tipping fees at the Turkey Creek landfill run by Santek. The county has 33,000 tons left and plans to donate the amount to Center Point and Clay. The county is already donating some trucks and workers to help with debris removal but due to budget cutbacks the county's resources are limited.

"It's a way to we can step up and help them. It will be a tremendous help to these people. The problem is getting trucks out there and getting it up. We just don't have that many trucks," Joe Knight, Jefferson Co. Commissioner said.

So far, the federal government has not declared a designation to allow the cities and county to be reimbursed for storm removal. The commissioners' decision will help lessen the two cities costs.
