There is a move to regulate private investigators in Alabama. The Alabama Private Investigators Association is pushing a bill that would create a Private Investigator Board. The bill is sponsored by Springville Rep. Jim McClendon
Bill Posey, a private investigator from Capshaw and a member with the association, says anyone can pay a business license and call themselves a private investigator. Posey says this includes criminals or child molesters because there are no background checks.
"We have people out there taking people's money and giving no service. You got some get out of prison and go down to the local courthouse and get a business license, that is all this required," Posey said.
Posey says there is no cost to create the board. The organization would be funded by fees paid to get licenses. Anyone convicted of a felony or moral turpitude will be prohibited from getting a license.
