Saggy pants become an expensive fashion statement

Saggy pants become an expensive fashion statement

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

It's not the first time we've heard this debate, but one Birmingham city councilor hopes it'll be the last. We're talking about sagging pants.

Montgomery may have a ban and councilman Jay Roberson hopes Birmingham is next.

Gerell Morris said "I've seen kids wearing pants down, pulling them up trying to walk. Not good at all."

Deborah Hollis said, "Oh I hate that, I hate it."

Terry Lawson says he was brought up wearing his pants sagging and it's just "the style".

Lawson said, "Now if you're wearing  them all the way down showing your whole behind. Then yeah this is just sagging a little bit."

People in Montgomery County could get fined up to $150 for wearing their pants sagging. A saggy pants law for that county passed unanimously in the state house. If it passes in the senate and becomes law, Representative Alvin Holmes says he'll push for the same thing statewide.

Holmes said,  "It's filthy, disrespectful to grandmothers, mothers wives, children."

Birmingham city councilor Jay Roberson commends the house for taking a stand against the sag. He says since parents won't teach their children to dress appropriately then the state needs to step in.

Jay Roberson said, "You can't do everything you see on tv, in a video.  Wearing your pants below your waistline is not acceptable at all. I hope we can have this law passed statewide. As a local official I support. It will eliminate a lot of issues with dress and decorum with young people."

If the law passes, offenders would not face jail time for not paying the fine. If they don't or can't pay, they'll have to do community service.

Representative Holmes is very serious about making this a statewide law. We'll have to wait and see if he gets support on this in the legislature.
