Smaller candy bars are coming to an aisle near you

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Major changes could be coming to your favorite candy. Mars, the maker of popular candy like the Snickers and M&M's has vowed to cut the calories to 250 or less.

They are changing up the ingredients and cutting on saturated fats. They are also changing the portions. Those king size bars are now going to be split into portions, that way you if you want you can eat some now and save the rest for later. But not everyone thinks this is going to make that big of a difference.

"I don't think it's going to make a really big impact," said Jack McConnico of Birmingham.

Anthony Lovoy agrees, "I think it's silly."

"I don't think it will help," said Sam Mosley.

The company hopes by changing the ingredients and making bars smaller, it will help combat the high levels of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. What do you think? Will it make a big difference? "It's about portion control, but you can get two smaller size candy bars," said Mary Kidder.

"I don't think it's going to help anything because you can just by two or three," said McConnico.

Leaving some to wonder if this new campaign about getting healthy or is it a way to make more money. "That means the small ones will go up in price," said Lovoy.

"King size is cheaper or just same as regular size. You are going to have to pay double amount," said Mosley.

The company says it is about the healthy initiative and nothing else. They vow to have the new bars on the shelf by 2013.
