BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Despite scarce educational dollars, UAB is making a case for spending millions of additional funds for research. On Monday, UAB President Carol Garrison briefed the Jefferson County House Delegation on the schools legislative agenda.

At the top of UAB's wish list is support for building $300-million worth of new research buildings along the 18th corridor.

Lawmakers say UAB's research efforts are critical to expanding the economy of the region and state.

"The state can. Obviously the issue is trying with tough budgets we are looking at this year. We've got to think two or three years down the road. You can't wait until the economy is better to make plans," said Homewood Representative Paul DeMarco.

Garrison told the lawmakers she expects UAB's financial impact on the state to grow from $4.6 billion to $6.6 billion in the coming years.
