A bill being presented to the Health Comittee could give midwives the legal right to assist at in-home births in Alabama.
Currently Alabama is one of eight states where assisting in-home births as a midwife is illegal. Anyone caught doing so could face prosecution and misdemeanor charges.
But that could all changeif Senate Bill 314 is passed. Lawmakers will discuss the bill at a public hearing next week in Montgomery. Chairmain of the Health Committee Sen. Greg Reed will make the decision to send the bill to the senate floor during that hearing.
In FOX6 News at 10, reporter Vanessa Araiza explores why midwifery is illegal in Alabama, and what advocates, including a midwife certified in Tennessee and a mother of five, say about the benefits of in-home birth.
