BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Fox6 Meteorologist Mickey Ferguson says severe storms striking North Alabama could be a hint at what is in store for Central Alabama.

Ferguson says homes have been reported damaged in Athens and a large tornado was spotted leaving Meridianville. There have even been reports of people trapped in their cars.

"This type of situation is what could happen to this area later today," said Ferguson. "The early afternoon hours through the evening could hold a significant severe weather threat."

The severe weather is expected to enter our area in what Head Meteorologist J.P. Dice calls a "one-two punch." The first round is expected between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and will consist of isolated tornadoes that precede the cold front. The second round will hit around 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 as the cold front moves through the state.

The most severe weather in our area is expected above I-20, but J.P. Dice says everyone should be prepared.

"If you can watch FOX6, then you are in danger from the severe weather," said Dice.
