The Alabama Department of Transportation is working to replace a stretch of northbound Interstate 20/59 in Bessemer. To do that, about two miles of the highway are closed to traffic for about 30 days. Once the northbound side is done, the southbound side will be shut down in order to be rebuilt. Travellers are urged to use I-459, or the posted detours through Bessemer.
Here is more on the project and detours from ALDOT.
Motorists are Urged to use Posted Detours on I-59 NB in Bessemer
I-59 Northbound is closed for at least 30 days as Pavement Reconstruction Project Continues
JEFFERSON COUNTY – A project to improve Interstate 59 from Alabama Adventure Parkway (Exit 110) to north of the CSX railroad overpass in Bessemer is now under way.
The northbound lanes of I-59, from Exit 110 to north of the CSX Railroad Overpass, are closed for approximately the next 30 days. To avoid lengthy travel delays, local motorists are encouraged to use the signed local detour exiting I-59 NB at Exit 108 (Academy Drive) to U.S. Highway 11 to
19th Street and back on to I-59 NB at Exit 112. Thru traffic and truck traffic are strongly urged to use I-459.
Once the northbound lanes are completed, the southbound lanes will close and a detour route will be used. Each set of interstate lane closures is expected to last about 30 days. A $30,000 per day incentive/disincentive is included in the contract with the bonus or penalty to the contractor calculated upon completion.
The Alabama Department of Transportation's $9.5 million project will rebuild 1.7 miles of the interstate in both directions. The project will use a construction method called rubblization to crush the original concrete roadway as a base for new asphalt lanes. The new grade of the roadway will actually be higher than before, requiring bridge decks to be raised and shoulders to be adjusted to the new roadway elevation.
The expected completion date for the entire project is early Summer 2012.
