BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police have charged a suspect in a sexual assault and burglary case from July 2011 in Southside.

Police say the suspect broke into the victim's Highland Avenue apartment through a second story balcony, sexually assaulted the victim, cut her throat and stabbed her in the abdomen. The victim survived the attack and has recovered from her injuries.

Police said in July 2011 that the suspect broke into at least two other residences in the Southside area in addition to the apartment where he attacked the female victim.

The burglary and assault occurred Wednesday, July 27, 2011. The BPD Sex Crimes Unit created a composite image of the suspect soon after the attack. The composite and other sources led Birmingham police to identify the suspect as Wyndell Hamner, 24, of Birmingham. Officers with the BPD Sex Crimes Unit, Homicide Unit, and Crime Reduction Team located Hamner and took him into custody in the 3000 block of Avenue H.

Hamner has been charged with attempted murder, first degree rape, first degree burglary and kidnapping. The attempted murder charge has a $400,000 bond and the rape, burglary and kidnapping charges each have a $60,000 bond.

"We are elated that this investigation has culminated in an arrest," Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said in a release. "I applaud the members of the BPD Sex Crimes Unit in their diligent effort of working through leads to bring this suspect into custody," Roper stated.
