In our growing digital world, privacy is more of a concern than ever before. There are hundreds of websites which collect information about you.
One of those websites is Spokeo.com. This website collects and sells information -- about anyone, to anyone who wants it.
If you want to have your information removed from websites like Spokeo.com, check the Help section for instructions on how to hide or remove your information. Keep in mind: much of the information these websites collect and sell is information legally gathered from public websites and government agencies.
In addition, you should take steps to protect your identity. The Federal Trade Commission offers this advice:
1) Never give out your personal information, such as your social security number, to someone you don't trust. This information should not be handed out over the phone, through the mail, or over the internet unless you know who you are dealing with.
2) Avoid disclosing personal financial information when using a public, wireless internet connection. Hackers can easily see what you are sending.
3) Never click on links sent to you in an unsolicited email. Those links can launch programs which can steal information from your computer.
For more tips on protecting your identity, visit the Federal Trade Commission's special web page on identity theft at ftc.gov.
