TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Texas Tech President Guy Bailey will interview next week to become the next president of the University of Alabama.

Bailey is originally from Montgomery and a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School.

The news was announced Friday morning in the following statement from the University of Alabama:

President Guy Bailey of Texas Tech University has been invited to interview for the Presidency of The University of Alabama, according to an announcement today by UA System Chancellor Robert E. Witt.  Dr. Bailey will be interviewed by the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System Wednesday, July 11, in the Bryant Conference Center.  The meeting is open to the public and begins at 11 a.m.

An Alabama native and a two-time UA graduate, Dr. Bailey was named president of Texas Tech in 2008.  Under his watch, the campus has grown significantly in size and stature, including major new research partnerships with public and private entities.   He currently serves on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the NCAA as well as the Executive Committee of the Big XII athletic conference and the Board of Trustees of Midwest Research Institute.

Dr. Bailey was previously Chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (2006-2008) and Provost and Executive Vice President at The University of Texas at San Antonio (1999-2005).  He has also served at the University of Nevada, the University of Memphis, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Emory University.

"The Presidential Search Advisory Committee gathered extensive data from faculty, staff, students, alumni and community leaders about the experience and attributes that should define the University's next President," Chancellor Witt said.  "As one would expect, the opportunity to lead the Capstone drew tremendous interest from sitting campus presidents across the country."

Dr. Witt said Guy Bailey emerged as the leading candidate by a wide margin:  "One of our best and brightest graduates, Guy Bailey knows his alma mater and his home state from top to bottom – and he brings a wealth of national leadership experience that is an impressive match for the selection criteria developed by the Search Committee.  I am very pleased that he has agreed to interview with the Board of Trustees next week."

Interim UA President Judy Bonner described Guy Bailey as an outstanding academic leader who has earned a strong national reputation for his achievements in higher education.   "Guy Bailey has done an excellent job at Texas Tech, increasing momentum and positioning the campus as a major engine for economic development.  We are proud to count him among our graduates and look forward to welcoming him back to campus next week."
