(RNN) - An op-ed piece written by former Penn State coach Joe Paterno was published on the website FightOnState.com, a sports news website.
The family released the column, which was written by the coach in late December or early January.
"This is not a football scandal and should not be treated as one," Paterno wrote, defending the Penn State football program in the wake of the child abuse scandal by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
Sandusky was the defensive coordinator for Penn State for more than 45 years. In June, a jury convicted him of 45 counts of abusing 10 boys over 15 years.
