Former Anniston council member David Dawson has been arrested on a grand jury indictment, accusing him of first degree theft.
Anniston Police confirm Dawson turned himself in Wednesday morning at the police department. From there he was taken to the Calhoun County Jail.
Dawson, who was elected in 2008 and resigned this past April, is accused of stealing more than $5,000 from Anniston Pathology Associates, his former employer. Anniston Police Lt. Fred Forsythe says the arrest stems from incidents that happened in the last four years of his employment at the practice, before his resignation in January of this year.
The indictment accuses Dawson of stealing more than $5,000, which is the threshold for a first degree theft felony indictment. However, sources tell Fox6 News the actual amount believed to be stolen is much larger than that.
Dawson is also being sued, along with Anniston Pathology and Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, for alleged sexual harassment.
After missing a few council meetings, Dawson resigned in April. At the time, he said in his letter of resignation he had taken a new job out of town and the trips would interfere with his duties as a councilor. Marcus Dunn was appointed to replace him and is running for election to the seat.
Bond was set at $25,000.
