Daniel Gentry, 24, pleaded not guilty by reason of mental defect to a capital murder charge for the death of Elaine Gentry. He faces life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.
Prosecutors allege that Daniel hit his grandmother, Elaine, with a hammer and then stabbed her to death.
Judge Bostick will not set any future court dates until Daniel's mental state is evaluated. Bostick also assigned an additional lawyer to defend Daniel.
Elaine was reported missing March 29, 2012 and authorities mounted a multi-county search for her. Her silver Lexus SUV was discovered in mid April at the bottom of a rock quarry in Leeds. Her body was discovered inside the vehicle.
Daniel was arrested shortly after her disappearance for a probation violation and has been held in the Shelby County Jail with no bond.
