The group hopes the rally will have an impact on the community.Several groups in Birmingham and the surrounding communities are fed up with the violence so they're taking action.
Several groups sponsored a "Stop the Violence" rally Friday night. It started at chambers funeral home in Bessemer. A black hearse led the group down the Bessemer Super Highway to the central park recreation center.
That's where Donald Shepherd shared his story about life in prison. Shepherd spent 15 years in prison for receiving stolen property and burglary. His message to others is don't throw rocks at the penitentiary. Each time someone commits a crime Shepherd says they are basically throwing themselves at prison. Shepherd hopes his story will help stop the violence.
