BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The city of Birmingham is moving forward with plans to improve transportation and connect several of the city's communities.

One of the many projects the city is undertaking is to create a walking trail in Ensley. It will start near the Tuxedo Terrace housing development and end near Ensley Park. One neighbor says a walking trail isn't a bad idea but she worries that safety may be an issue.

"Just from observation when I pass through the area," Lucille Gaines said.

City councilor Steven Hoyt says if it's done right safety won't be a problem.  He hopes the trail, along with new schools and businesses, will attract more people to the Ensley area.

"If you already have value in the community then it certainly adds to that process," Hoyt said.

The plan is for the trail to be lighted. The city must match a percentage of the grant funds for each project.
