Alabaster police said they received several 911 calls reporting a man sitting on the railing of the I-65 bridge, appearing that he was going to jump. The calls came in around 8:15 a.m. and police officers arrived at the scene at 8:17 a.m., police chief Stanley Oliver said in a release.
Officers made contact with the man and began to negotiate with him. At the same time, they ordered all traffic to be stopped on the interstate.
At 9:20 a.m., police say the man retreated from the railing. He was taken into protective custody and then taken to UAB hospital, Chief Oliver said.
The interstate has reopened to traffic.
