(Source: Clare Huddleston)The 12-year-old Birmingham boy accidentally shot in the neck by his 16-year-old brother last week passed away on Sunday, the Jefferson County coroner confirms.
The victim, identified as Mikhese Hood, died at Children's of Alabama on Sunday, Aug. 5. He was rushed to the hospital after the being shot last Thursday.
Police say around 3 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, Hood's 16-year old brother was trying to uncock a gun when he accidentally pulled the trigger, and shot the 12-year-old boy in the neck.
Hood's mom tried to drive him to the hospital herself but got a flat tire, so she ran to the Eastlake fire station, knocked on the door, and firefighters rushed him the rest of the way in an ambulance.
The Jefferson County Coroner's office tells us Hood was pronounced dead yesterday afternoon at Children's of Alabama hospital.
The hospital has to make that call before the process of organ donation can begin. Hood's family tells us he will be an organ donor.
Birmingham Police confirmed today this is still an ongoing investigation and will now be handled by the homicide division because it is a death investigation.
Mikhese Hood had just turned 12 and was going into the 7th grade at Ossie Ware Mitchell middle school.
FOX6 spoke to several school staff members today who were shocked to hear about his death because they also thought he was going to be able to recover.
We were unable to reach the family today to get confirmation of any arrangements.
