Today is a pivotal deadline in that legal battle between the Birmingham School Board and the State Board of Education. Both sides are expected to have their final legal arguments in writing and handed to the judge today.
The state and Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon are suing the board for trying to fire him and avoid the authority of the state, which has taken over Birmingham's finances.
A judge is expected to rule in the case, shortly after the legal arguments are turned in. The temporary restraining order keeping Witherspoon on the job and the state in control has been extended.
