Source: WBRC videoA Bibb County Sheriff deputy's car crashed into a Tuscaloosa County business on Sunday morning. The accident happened at J and D Tanning Salon in Vance around 7 a.m.
The deputy has been identified as Chad Shockley, 26. He has been with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office for around two years, Sheriff Keith Hannah said.
Shockley was released from UAB hospital late Sunday, Hannah confirmed.
Shockley went off Highway 11 and drove through at least four yards before crashing into the tanning salon.
A woman who lived nearby says when she approached the car after the accident and the deputy pulled a gun on her. The deputy got out, ran to the back of the building and collapsed. He was airlifted to UAB Hospital.
"(It's the) First time I've ever seen anything like this in Vance. It's shocking for everybody," said witness Melissa Mathis.
Tuscaloosa deputies searched the area immediately after the accident to make sure a criminal suspect was not on the loose. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office said in a release that they searched the area using a helicopter and bloodhound.
Sgt. Andy Norris said deputies confirmed there was no criminal activity and that the wreck was being treated as a traffic accident.
Shockley's toxicology report came back negative, Sheriff Hannah said. Hannah says the deputy may have been disoriented from the crash and unsure of his surroundings when he got out of his car.
Sgt. Norris said the investigation has been turned over to Alabama State Troopers.
