Nine employees of the Birmingham Water Works Board have been fired for "violating board policies and procedures."
"Nine employees were terminated yesterday," WaterWorks Board General Manager Mac Underwood told FOX6 News.
"Those employees violatd board policies and procedures, and those violations warranted strict and quick resolution. So we took the actions yesterday to terminate those employees," Underwood said.
The employees who were fired ranged in length of service and level of employment. No managers were let go.
The Birmingham Police department also confirmed their Major Fraud unit is conducting a criminal investigation involving WaterWorks Board employees, but wouldn't describe the allegations.
Underwood said it will be up to police to decide whether the ex-employees face criminal charges.
