Bessemer has joined the growing list of Alabama cities banning smoking in all public places.
The Bessemer city council voted Tuesday night to pass the ordinance. It replaces a law passed in 2007.
Under that law, hotels, bars and restaurants could designate smoking areas inside. The new ordinance would end smoking in those areas.
Those in favor of the new law, such as the Jefferson County Health Action Partnership, say smoking bans protect non-smokers from second hand smoke.
