The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, August 21, 2012:
If you have any questions about just how important UAB is to Birmingham…stand atop Red Mountain and gaze down at the city. The red brick buildings of the UAB campus fill the skyline. Researchers tell us that one of the most important keys to economic stability and growth in this century is to have a medical university in your city. We are blessed to have UAB, the state's largest employer, right here in our back yard. Its influence and impact extends far beyond critical medical research and education to job creation, economic development, revitalization and the arts.
During Dr. Carol Garrison's ten year tenure as President of UAB, the campus has grown dramatically, the student population has grown and become more diverse. In that time, she has seen the local market go from boom to bust and has been part of the leadership effort, working with the Birmingham Business Alliance, to bring the region back to prosperity.
Strong, effective leadership is not easy to find. It is difficult to watch a leader with Dr. Garrison's skills and vision step aside. We wish her the very best.
