BRIGHTON, AL (WBRC) -

One suspect was killed and another suspect was injured in an officer-involved shooting today in Brighton, Jefferson County officials confirm.

The coroner identifies the suspect killed as Calvin Lee Robinson, Jr. The suspect who was shot and injured was transported to the hospital. The injured suspect's condition is unknown.

The Assistant District Attorney for Jefferson County, Bill Veatch, says the suspects were part of an on-going drug investigation. Hueytown Police Chief Chuck Hagler says they were suspected drug dealers.

Hagler confirmed today that two Hueytown narcotics officers interacted with two suspected drug dealers as part of an on-going investigation. Hagler said gunfire was exchanged.

He says the two narcotics officers involved in the shooting were not injured.

The shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on Parker Springs Street in a residential area of Brighton off of the Bessemer Super Highway.

Witnesses at the scene say there was a car chase just before the shooting. They describe seeing a black Mazda being chased down the Bessemer Super Highway by law enforcement vehicles, both marked and unmarked. The chase turned down Parker Springs Street, where witnesses say they heard several rounds of gunfire and the black Mazda came to a halt.

The investigation has been handed over to the Alabama Bureau of Investigations, which is a standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting. Agents with the ABI arrived to the scene around 1:20 p.m.

Hueytown police, Birmingham police, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services responded to the scene.

The case will eventually go before the Jefferson County District Attorney.
