Sgt. Andrew Didcoct with Homewood PD says residents should always lock their doors, keep curtains closed and watch out for suspicious activity. Source: WBRC videoHomewood Police are asking for your help tonight in trying to solve a string of burglaries in the west Homewood area.
Since the beginning of June, six homes in the Oak Grove area of West Homewood have been burglarized and police are seeing a pattern.
"Monday through Thursday, usually between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., it appears they're forcing doors open or going through an unlocked door," said Sgt. Andrew Didcoct.
Investigators say the thieves are targeting electronics like laptops and cameras, and jewelry.
Police listed the following suspects and suspect vehicles in a release:
-Newer, clean, smaller truck, possibly a Toyota or Ford with four doors, unknown driver
-White Chevrolet van driven by a black male
-Tan colored older model Cadillac, unknown driver
-White male claiming to be an ADT representative selling alarms
Police say the problem may be there aren't enough eyes and ears watching out to keep watch on other people's homes.
"Everybody be a neighborhood watch person," Didcoct said. "Be aware of your neighbors, are they out of town? If you see a suspicious vehicle backed up that you don't recognize, go ahead and call 911 and let us come check it out."
To protect yourself, police are recommending you arm your alarm every time you leave the house if you have one, and keep your doors locked.
Sgt. Didcoct added another suggestion: Keep your curtains closed.
"I think these guys ride around, looking in windows. If they can look in the windows and see the big screen TV, or see something expensive they want through your window, they're gonna break in your house. So I say keep the curtains closed," Sgt. Didcoct said.
Homewood police also say they've identified a couple of possible suspects in a string of burglaries in the Hollywood area of Homewood.
That investigation has been going on for the past couple of months.
Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call the Homewood Police Department at 332-6200 or leave a tip online at www.homewoodpd.org.
