Source: WBRC videoA Birmingham police officer and a suspect were both admitted to the hospital after an early morning shooting. The shooting is under investigation by the ABI.
The police officer was released from the hospital later in the day on Friday, Aug. 24. The injured suspect is reportedly in stable condition.
Police say the incident began with a burglary at the ABC store near 4th Ave. North around 2 a.m.
An officer stopped a possible suspect near the store and an altercation started, which ended with the officer shooting the possible burglary suspect, Lieutenant Scott Praytor with Birmingham Police said.
Terry Sykes witnessed the events and says he saw an officer chasing the suspect.
"When I was coming out of the cooler, I came outside and I heard three gunshots right over here. I saw one guy running up the sidewalk and another guy running up by Jim Burke and police was running right behind them," Sykes said.
He says the suspect made it to the Jim Burke Nissan and then collapsed.
Police blocked off 4th Ave. North for around an hour to process the multiple crime scenes. The homicide unit and ABI combed through clues and found a black ski mask and shell casings.
Surveillance video may have also captured the burglary and shooting since security cameras were installed at the ABC store and the nearby plasma center.
