Isaac has been tracking more westward with the center of the forecast cone targeting south Mississippi.
The center of Isaac's circulation was found just south of Key West.
The storm is passing Florida and is expected to head north. The FOX6 Stormwarn Team says Tropical Storm Isaac is still categorized as a 'tropical storm', but it is growing in intensity.
As of 11 a.m. on Sunday, the system was around 50 miles south of Key West. Sustained winds over south Florida were reported to be in the 30 mph range with 35 mph reported in Marathon, Florida and 38 mph reported at the Miami Kendall-Tamiami Airport.
FOX6 Meteorologist Wes Wyatt says there is an increase in convection around the south end of the circulation center. Wyatt says this is a sign of the storm's growing intensity.
Isaac has been tracking more westward with the center of the forecast cone targeting south Mississippi. This places Alabama within the threat zone for coastal and inland impacts since the storm could still track west or east within the cone.
FOX6 Chief Meteorologist J.P. Dice says if the storm does make landfall around Mobile or Biloxi, tropical storm force winds could be seen in Alabama as far north as Chilton County. This could also result in a few spin-up tornadoes from the increased wind shear. Dice adds that if the storm tracks farther west towards New Orleans, it is possible that central Alabama will only see a little rain with breezy conditions.
Hurricane watches are now in effect from east of Morgan City, LA to Indian Pass, FL.
