The Red Cross has their vehicles on standby for the storm. If you prepare properly, you might not need their assistance.Depending on where the storm hits, it could mean problems for us right here in the Birmingham area.
The Red Cross is already mobilizing to help those who could end up in the path of the storm and the disaster operations center is getting set up in Montgomery.
All eyes are on Isaac. Forecasters are trying to figure out where he is going to hit and Alabama is not in the clear.
The FOX6 Stormwarn team says Isaac will cause problems for the northern Gulf Coast. It could also cause problems for Birmingham, but it is really too early to tell.
Folks are being warned to get prepared for any situation that might arise.
"When you get tropical storm forced winds over much of the state of Alabama, you are going to have a lot trees down, that will cause power outages throughout the area," said FOX6 Meteorologist Dennis Washington.
Where Issac hits will determine whether Alabama deals with more than just power outages.
"Certainly, the closer the eye of the storm is to the state of Alabama, to Birmingham, the more likely we will see the small spin up tornadoes that have been very common with land falling hurricanes," said Washington.
The American Red Cross isn't taking chances; all weekend long, they have been mobilizing.
"We've got staff and volunteers all over the state that are positioned strategically. Some that are in logistics, some that are in the community and service delivery. Certainly, all over the state, from Huntsville to Mobile, we have Red Cross who are standing in the gap ready to respond," said Chris Osborne with the Red Cross.
"Just pay attention to what's going on. We still have a couple of days here in the Birmingham area before the storm could make an impact in the northern half of Alabama, so just stay aware to the changing weather conditions and weather forecast," said Dennis Washington.
It is important to have the right supplies when you are getting ready for a big storm to hit. We suggest you stock up on flashlights and extra batteries for each person in your family. You will also want to purchase a battery-operated radio and a first aid kit. Make sure you have important papers handy in case you need to evacuate your home.
