Before Tuesday, William Green didn't know what his neighbor at his Calera apartment had reportedly done to a 3-month-old child.
"He seemed to be friendly towards the child. You know, that's basically from what I can tell," said Green.
According to an arrest warrant carried out by Calera Police last Thursday, August 30, 23-year-old Tremain Gates was wanted for domestic violence.
In the warrant it stated he was watching the infant the night of August 25. It goes on to say he slammed the child in to a corner of the wall and also threw him on the floor.
"I'm basically at a loss for words. I mean it's kind of shocking especially you know when it involves a small child," said Green.
Another part of the report showed when the mother, Dominique Ume, got home the next morning she noticed her son could only open one eye, was lethargic and crying differently.
Ume took her son to Shelby Baptist Hospital and after an examination by physicians, he was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
These details continue to leave people like Green in a state of disbelief.
"I'm very shocked. I never would think that something like that would happen around here," said Green.
Gates remains in the Shelby County jail on a $1 million bond. He is charged with domestic violence-assault in the first degree.
Authorities have not commented on the exact relationship between Ume, Gates and the infant. As of Tuesday evening, Children's Hospital had not returned calls from FOX6 News regarding the condition of the infant.
