TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -
The Alabama Crimson Tide showed no difficulty in dispatching the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.
Four plays into the game and in less than 2 minutes, the Tide made its first score of the game. The drive included two complete A.J. McCarron passes and two rushes by Eddie Lacy and covered 72 yards. Christion Jones was responsible for carrying one of the passes across the goal line just before the 13:00 mark. The Jeremy Shelley extra point was good.
Alabama returned to the end zone with a little under 6 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Due to a Hilltoppers fumble, Alabama found themselves at the Western Kentucky 33. A single pass from A.J. McCarron to Kevin Norwood covered the 33 yards needed for the touchdown. Another Shelley kick set Bama's score to 14.
Freshman running back T.J. Yeldon shined during the game. On Alabama's next score, Yeldon was instrumental in the drive, being responsible for 31 yards of the 68-yard drive. Yeldon did not claim the touchdown, though. The score was acquired by another pass to Christion Jones for 22 yards. Once again, Jeremy Shelley made the extra point.
Bama came back from halftime and made another quick score. Hilltoppers QB Kawaun Jakes' pass was intercepted by the Tide's Deion Belue at the Western Kentucky 40 and returned to the 12-yard-line. From there, A.J. McCarron was able to connect with Kevin Norwood in the endzone. Shelley's extra point boosted the score to 28 with 13:15 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
The 4th quarter in the game seemed to be a constant back-and-forth between the teams until a breakaway run by Alabama's Kenyan Drake. Drake rushed 32 yards into the endzone with 1:47 remaining in the game. This is the first touchdown in the game that was not a pass from A.J. McCarron.
The final score in the game came to 35-0 in Bama's favor. Next week, the Crimson Tide hits the road to take on #8 ranked Arkansas for their first challenge from within the SEC.
