Casey Cumberland's parents didn't want to go on camera, but they did speak with FOX6 News reporter Christy Hutchings about their son's life and his death.
According to Cumberland's parents, Casey was at the wrong place at the wrong time Sunday afternoon. They say that all three victims, Casey, Joshua Smith, and Simeon Gilmore, were all shot while sleeping. The Cumberlands say this all stems from a $40 drug debt.
The Cumberlands did know Joshua Smith because he and Casey went to school together. They didn't know Gilmore or the man charged in the shootings, Jon Staggs, Jr.
Now, the Cumberlands are struggling to make sense of the loss. Casey also leaves behind a young son, Caden, who will turn two next month.
In an attempt to help the Cumberlands, a friend of Casey's is asking the community to donate money to the family for funeral expenses.
Megan Chambliss says she knew Casey well and is shocked that he was one of the people killed over the weekend.
"I was devastated. I couldn't believe that happened to one of our close friends," she said.
She decided she wanted to help Casey's family and now Johnny Ray's Barbeque, where she works, is raising money for them.
